How to Get Repeat Work From Past Customers
Every contractor chases new leads. Meanwhile the easiest jobs you'll ever book are sitting in your phone — people who already hired you, already trust you, and already paid you. They don't need convincing. They just need reminding. Here's how to turn one-time customers into repeat work without spending a dollar on ads.
Why past customers are the best leads you have
A stranger has to check your reviews, get references, compare bids, and talk themselves into trusting you. A past customer skips all of it. They know your work, they know you show up, and they already know your prices are fair. That's why repeat jobs close faster, at higher prices, with almost no haggling. The only reason you're not getting them is that nobody reached out — and out of sight is out of mind.
When to reach back out
Timing beats cleverness. A few natural moments to circle back:
- Seasonally. Gutters before fall, AC before summer, deck sealing in spring. Whatever you do, there's a "this is the time of year for it" hook.
- On a cycle. If you painted them three years ago, that's about when they'll start thinking about it again. Same for roofs, flooring, and most big work.
- After a related job. Did the kitchen? The bathroom's often next. Point it out.
- Just because. A simple "how's everything holding up?" check-in months later reopens the door with zero pressure.
What to actually text
Keep it human and low-pressure. You're not blasting a promo — you're a person they know checking in:
"Hey {Name}, it's {you} — hope the {past job} is still treating you well. We're heading into {season}, and I had a little room in the schedule, so I figured I'd check in. Anything on your list I can help knock out?"
That's it. No hard sell. You're reminding them you exist, that you had a good experience together, and that you've got time. Half the game is just being the name they think of when something needs doing.
Ask for the referral while you're at it
Past customers don't just rebook — they hand you their neighbors. When a job wraps, or when you check in later, plant the seed:
"Glad you're happy with it. If you know anyone else who needs {work}, I'd really appreciate you passing my name along — word of mouth is how we grow."
People are happy to refer a contractor they trust. They just rarely think to unless you ask.
Keep a simple list
You can't reach back out to people you've lost track of. Keep a running list of past customers — name, job, date, and when it'd make sense to check in. Even a notebook beats nothing. The gold is in the timing: knowing that the family whose roof you did five years ago is due for a look, or that spring is when your deck customers start thinking about staining again.
What NOT to do
Don't spam everyone the same generic blast — it reads like marketing and gets ignored. Don't only reach out when you're desperate for work; the check-ins land better when they're regular, not panicked. And don't assume a happy customer will call you first. They won't. They'll call whoever reached out, even if your work was better.
The real problem: nobody remembers to circle back
Repeat work is the cheapest revenue in the trades, and almost every contractor leaves it on the table for one reason: they forget. You finish the job, move on, and three years later that perfect repeat customer hires whoever texted them last. The winning move is a system that remembers for you.
That's what QuoteChaser does. Beyond chasing open quotes, it keeps your past customers on a gentle, well-timed check-in by text and email — seasonal nudges and cycle reminders that go out automatically — and pings you when someone's ready for more work. Your back catalog of happy customers turns into a steady stream of easy, high-trust jobs instead of a list you never look at.
